What is a Data Source?
Data Sources are located under the DISCOVERY menu option on the top menu bar.
Data Sources are the objects that ActiveNav Cloud processes to discover content; they are created to manage resources efficiently. Data Sources manage the interaction between ActiveNav Cloud and any given repository. A Data Source is uniquely defined by its address; the address format will depend upon the repository. Data Sources can be defined at any level of a repository hierarchy.
WARNING: Data Sources are case-sensitive, ensure that you have the correct format when entering your path for the Data Source as entering it incorrectly will cause a failure.
Rules Packs
Rules Packs (e.g., Feature Extraction Rules and Scores Rules) are used by Data Sources to locate low-scoring data and are an integral part of ActiveNav Cloud. These are updated from time to time, and when available, a message will appear on the Data Sources page as shown below:
WARNING: It is important to note that when you Update the Rules Pack, it will overwrite any existing rules, including any custom rules that may have been added to Feature Extraction/Scores rules. Please make copies of your Feature Extraction and Scores rules before you proceed with Updating the Rules Pack.
Repository
A Repository is the type of storage within which a customer manages resources. Each type of repository will require a different approach to connect to and will likely have a different and distinct range of resource types, properties, and structures. Repository types include:
- File Share - a Windows Shared directory that the Collector accesses.
- SharePoint - a server URL used to store, organize, share, and access data within an organization.
- Teams - the messenger service Teams' chat history.
- OneDrive - OneDrive is the Microsoft cloud service that connects you to all your files. It lets you store and protect your files, share them with others, and get to them from anywhere on all your devices.
Data Source Friendly Name
This friendly name lets you know what the Data Source represents in your data repository. For example, we may call our Data Source "Sales" when we have targeted the \\RBT-543.prestteam.local\Sales file share.
Discovery Type
This setting determines which type of Discovery action should be performed. Discovery is limited to gathering the resource hierarchy and gathering basic metadata, while Feature Extraction captures information from within the content of a given resource.
Data Source Actions
The following actions are available via the Data Source context menu:
Edit
The Edit option enables you to change the "Friendly Name" of the Data Source, and you can also enable/disable the "Inherit Credentials" setting.
Retry Failed
Use the Retry option when previous runs of a Data Source have failed. The Retry option reattempts Discovery on the failed containers.
Recalculate Scores
This option will recalculate the scores for all Business Units are assigned content from the associated Data Source. This action is required if you have modified a Business Unit or updated your scoring rules.
Refresh All
Use the Refresh option to perform a Re-Discovery on the Data Source.
Stop
This option will stop an in-progress Discovery activity.
Delete
Use the Delete option to Delete a Data Source from ActiveNav Cloud.
Audit
The Audit option downloads a file that includes failures in accessing containers during the initial Discovery stage.
Schedule
This option opens the selected Data Source's current schedule. This allows you to refresh the Data Source at a date and time in the future. Use the Action menu to Delete an entry from the list of scheduled discoveries.
A One Time schedule is an event that has a single occurrence at the date and time chosen in the Refresh Start Time field. Every Week will schedule the discovery on the same day (and time) as the date chosen in the Refresh Start Time. For schedules that are set Every Monthly, Every 3 Months or Every 6 Months, the discovery will occur on the same date (and time) on the appropriate months. Every Year schedules will occur on the same day of the year (at the same time).
You can define additional One Time events, but only one recurring schedule.
