How to Create Business Units

Overview

Business Units are used to match data and scores to information ownership by drawing together data sets into virtual groupings to represent business functions.

Business Units allow you to report on the results of individual Data Sources by combining paths into strategic groups.

NOTE: A path can only be assigned to a single Business Unit.

Create a Single Business Unit

1. Navigate to the Business Units page by selecting the Business Rules menu option.

4. To create a one Business Unit, select Create a Single Business Unit.

5. Enter a Name for the Business Unit.

6. Enter a Description for the Business Unit.

7. Select the Assigned Path(s) for the Business Unit from the dropdown list of defined Data Sources, or manually enter a path that has been added to the inventory by a previous Discovery.

NOTE: See Repository Paths for more information on how to create a path.

Click Save and Close on the Add Business Unit screen to commit the changes.

NOTE: To create a Business Unit manually, the Data Source(s) must already exist. You must select at least one path from the drop-down list. A path can only be assigned to a single Business Unit.

Create Multiple Business Units

8. You can add multiple paths to Business Units via a CSV. Select the Import Multiple Business Units option.

9. Add a CSV file to the upload area. The CSV requires two columns: BusinessUnit and Path. The upload process will create a new Business Unit if the value in the CSV does not already exist. For the Path, the target host must already be defined in ActiveNav Cloud. A host is defined when the first Data Source located on that host is created. See How to Create a Data Source for more details.

NOTE: See Repository Paths for more information on how to create a path.

Click Save and Close on the Add Business Unit screen to commit the changes.

10. The results of a CSV import for Business Units can be found on the Bulk Imports tab of the Business Units page. The Actions menu allows you to Export Upload Errors discovered during the import process, and you can remove the results from the list with the Delete command.

Repository Paths

When adding a location to a Business Unit, the path you enter must be formatted according to the repository type. Path formats follow the same formula as the root path when defining a Data Source.

The path you enter, whether for a single Business Unit, or in a CSV bulk import, must conform to the format for the target repository. See How to Create a Data Source for more information on Data Source path definitions.
